Statistics Jersey
Project info
Statistics Jersey is the official provider of independent statistics and analysis for the Government of Jersey. As the island’s central hub for open data, they play a critical role in collecting, analysing and publishing information across a wide spectrum of topics – from housing and retail to public wellbeing. Looking to step outside the constraints of the broader gov.je website, the team approached Blue Llama to help bring their new standalone digital presence to life.

The challenge
Statistics Jersey previously operated as a subsection within the main Government of Jersey website – a rigid environment with limited flexibility for presenting complex data. Their team needed far more than a few pages and basic content blocks; they required a fully bespoke platform where users could easily find, filter, and interpret large volumes of statistical information.
They also wanted to build and display data visualisations – from pie charts to scatter plots – without needing to manually code or compromise on visual consistency. With open data at the heart of their mission, integrating with external data sources and streamlining report management were critical. Ultimately, the key challenge was to design an intuitive, searchable platform that would serve both public users and the internal team equally well.
The Solution
We designed and developed a custom WordPress website tailored to the needs of both data consumers and the Statistics Jersey team. The build includes robust filtering and search tools, a flexible content architecture, and seamless mobile responsiveness. Key statistical headlines are automatically populated via open data sources, while charts and graphs can be created directly within the CMS using built-in tools – empowering the team to publish visualisations quickly and with consistency.
The site features a report repository with filtering and tagging, a subscription mechanism for users to receive updates, and a built-in workflow for content approval. We also handled the import and organisation of historical data, and cross-linked related content throughout the site to help users navigate between datasets and reports. Weekly collaboration with the client ensured every feature was tested against real workflows – resulting in a tightly integrated solution that aligned with their long-term goals.

The Results
The new Statistics Jersey website has been met with enthusiastic feedback. Users can now explore a wide array of statistics with far greater ease and clarity – supported by powerful filtering, striking visuals, and intuitive navigation. Internally, the team now enjoys the flexibility to create and manage content independently, supported by an editorial workflow that ensures accuracy and quality control.
By giving Statistics Jersey full ownership over their digital space, the project has transformed how they share their work with the public – and has laid the groundwork for a more open and accessible approach to data.
